Attractions in Olathe

Mahaffie Stagecoach: It is the only working Stagecoach stop on the santa fe trail, and the only one preserved as a historic site. You can either choose to ride in “Concord” style of coach, or the “Mudwagon” style of coach. There’s still Chickens, and Oxen living on this farm as they did in the 1860s. It is a place where you can experience life in 1860’s especially farming, and Stagecoach travel, but in addition experience the frontiers.

James Mahaffie purchased this 340 acre land in 1857 for farming. However, when stagecoach travel came along, this became a stop for stagecoach travelers. The Barlow, Sanderson, and Company stagecoach travel contracted with the Mehaffies to make it a stop. So it was an important stop given its location for stagecoaches carrying passengers as well as mail. The Mahaffies also started serving meals from their home for the hungry travelers as time progressed.

Ensor Park and Museum: This is a century old home and farm that belonged to the Ensors. See what life was like back then, as all the artifacts from that era have been preserved, including the farm tools, and equipment. There’s also a peg barn and other buildings that have been preserved, that’s still in the original condition including special Ensor archives.

Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art: This museum is part of Johnson County Community college, and is named after its donors Jerry and Margaret Nerman. Opened in 2007, this facility is a beautiful structure clad in Kansas limestone. The museum has 2 lobbies, an area for permanent collection, and a separate area for temporary exhibitions. The facility also has a 200 seat auditorium, a cafe, a store, and 2 classrooms. The Museum displays everything from American Indian art to Latino works, everything ranging from Painting, Sculpture, Photography, New Media, Clay, etc.

Lake Olathe Park: This park is 258 acres, with a 170 acre lake that’s spectacular. The Swim Beach area has lockers, vending machines, and a floating obstacle course called Aqua park. Here you can also rent Canoes, paddles and pedal boats. You can also bring along non-alcoholic beverages as well as coolers with food. Also you can bring umbrellas, as well as beach chairs. There’s also an upper event lawn with landscaping, and a stream. The water actually flows into a waterfall before ending up in a pond. A creek leading from the pond wraps around the newly built ground before flowing into the lake. An Amphitheater for 1500 in Lake Olathe’s background is a great way to enjoy outdoor events.

Kansas City Automotive Museum: Promoting Kansas City’s rich automotive heritage is this 10,000 square foot museum. Since Kansas city is home to automotive and motorcycle manufacturing and racing, it’s only natural that this city become a collector’s hub. This museum features more than 30 cars. The main attractions include 1965 Le Mans winner Masten Gregory, The Ford Winchester Plant, and Greenlease Cadillac. The museum also hosts car club meetings and other events throughout the year.
