High Desert Museum: A museum dedicated to bringing together wildlife, culture, and history, it is an amazing window into life in the high desert. Mount Bachelor: Largest ski resort by area, second largest single mountain ski resort in the U.S., as well as the sixth largest in the country. Known for its dry snow, with typical snowfall of over 462 inches, and a mid winter base of over 150 inches. The resort has a lift served vertical drop of 3,365 feet with a lift running to 9000 feet just 65 feet below the volcano’s summit. Since it’s one of the tallest mountains, it experiences high winds, often causing the chairlift to the summit to be put on standby. Total lift accessible area is 4318 acres, with about 1,600 acres groomed daily.
Deschutes National Forest: Situated on the eastsern slopes of the cascades, there’s more than 1.6 million acres of forest space to enjoy. The forest’s highest point is 10, 358 ft, and its lowest point is 1950 ft. With more than 80 campgrounds across the forest, visitors can enjoy a wide variety of ecosystems, and landscapes.
Lava River Cave: This mile long lava tube takes 1.5 hours to see in its entirety. There are 55 stairs of descent, flat areas, and even more stairways. To prevent spreading white nose syndrome to bats, they ask that you not wear clothing or gear used in other caves. They also recommend you wear close toed shoes and warm clothing, as the temperature inside is only 42 degrees fahrenheit. You will also need two light sources to successfully complete your cave trip.
Pilot Butte: A landmark that you can see from anywhere from Bend, it is a cinder cone structure that is the remains of an extinct volcano. This is not just a place to visit for its beauty, it had real practical application for those who were looking for a safe passage across the Deschutes river. Today there’s a road that goes up to the top and back down and is open from morning to night as long as there isn’t snow and ice. However if you want to trek, there are several different paths that lead up to the top, and you can make out spectacular views at different spots in the trail. If you are looking to learn along the way, there are signs that point out historical facts, and points of interest on your path up to the top. There are also benches as well as a circular wall that will help you sit yourself down and take in the breathtaking view. In short there are different ways to get up to the top: one is the mile long paved road, second is the steep nature trail, third is the base trail which winds around the volcano.
Lava Butte: Part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, you can walk down a path of molten area, particularly the 5.5 mile lava paved path, and enjoy your view when you get up to the top of the Butte. You can also spend your time under beautiful pines while attending a ranger talk. During the busy season from Memorial day weekend through labor day weekend, there is a shuttle that will take you to the top of the Butte at a cost of $2 per person.
